Baranov Still Missing, Presumed Dead
[MercNet] (13-Oct-67) – Questions are still being raised tonight as to the whereabouts of Hall's Emperor Baranov, now known to be missing since a freak ammunition dump explosion during the fighting in South Harney on October 10. Because of the Emperor’s position as the planetary head, the announced incorporation of Hall into the Free Worlds League has stalled until the Emperor can either be present to sign Order 395 or a new Emperor can be installed by the planetary Senate.

When queried again today at the morning press briefing, Executor Maribel DeYoung, a former Lieutenant in the Baranov Guard had this to say: “Because of the mass confusion of the battle that occurred in South Harney only three days ago, initial reports that had our Majesty killed in action were shown to be false after two Guardsmen located the Emperor’s ejector seat in a stand of chinwa trees less than a kilometer away from the initial explosion. He was treated for severe head trauma and transferred to MASH station 1048. As you all are aware, that station was overrun less than two hours later by a flank attack from the Dismal Disinherited. That attack killed several loyal Guardsmen who were awaiting medical aid and caused mass confusion and panic.
"It is our understanding that the mercenaries captured the Emperor and several other wounded soldiers for use as a bargaining chip to allow them to leave the planet unmolested. Which is why it is imperative that the Senate declare Emperor Baranov persona non grata and install a new Emperor immediately. I would urge them to consider a replacement who has military and political experience so they can lead Hall in its new place as a member of the Free Worlds League.
"When the Emperor is released, he will be well taken care of for leading this glorious change to a more secure future. Thank you for your time.”
The AMC units still on planet are currently holed up in the Diamondback Mountains. Sources inside the Interplanetary Trade Commission say that representatives of the AMC are trying to purchase additional transportation to assist them in their retreat after the Baranov Air Wing destroyed two of the AMC military DropShips. So far, the mercenaries have met heavy resistance in their attempted negotiations with various captains.
The retreating AMC units could not be reached for comment.
