For me one of the greatest draws to Battletech was the ability to build and modify the units in the game. Techmanual lays out comprehensive rules for constructing pretty much any unit you can imagine putting onto the game table and gives great construction examples for each class. While it isn't a must-have to play the game, it is a definite plus for anyone who wants to run a Battletech campaign.
